Curated by Hazel Hill McCarthy III for Show Cave in Los Angeles, Sonic Horticulture is a site-specific event in conjunction with the month long installation project, Terrarium, at the Hotel Mariakapel in Hoorn that considers the concept of ritual music and its influence on the growth and communication of plants through sound and video. Set within a 500-year old church, Terrarium will consist of a glass altar full of plants with a triptych of terrariums. Artists and performormers propose to manipulate the communication with these plants through Sonic Horticulture.

Live music performances by Lola Loshkey, Stellar Om Source, Modern Witch and Douglas J. McCarthy will begin at 9pm. These artists will commune with their plant environment.

Throughout the event, an audio-video installation by Hazel Hill McCarthy III will use the the sounds from the live performances to distort projected image though cymatic sand patterns.

Berlin based artist collective, dev01ded, will perform up/routed a performance based on “Plants’ roots must be buried in order to live while humans are only buried when they are dead or meant to die. We bury our fears and traumas deep inside ourselves hoping they will slowly disintegrate, but we end up rotting out from the inside. Physically routed to their own system of interactive video, sound, and light, dev01ded, embodying their fears, will be slowly buried within an hourglass of dirt and technology, and he who buries them further entrenching himself in fear.”

During the day London artists Lewis Wright and Richard Hougeuz will explore the relationship between bees and humans that occupies the local airwaves with their piece, Edging the Swarm. Visitors will be invited to join the experience as the duo explore the town of Hoorn broadcasting into the environment audio received via radio signals.

Justin visited Amsterdam from Portland and we had a jam session at Steim and recorded hours of music that may come out as a future Modern Witch / Early Adopters collaboration.

Taku showed us the studio he shares with all the old Steim synthesizers from the 1970's.

He referred to this group as the Dutch Tangerine Dream but we didn't have time to listen.

COMPOSING "PERCEPTUAL GEOGRAPHIES" FOR NEW MEDIA

It is with special pleasure that we welcome Maryanne Amacher to Session 5
of the SenseSonic digest. Described as 'the best kept secret in American
New Music' by The Wire (March 99), Maryanne studied with Karlheinz
Stockhausen at the University of Pennsylvania before going on to compose
works with John Cage and Merce Cunningham in the 1970s. Her numerous works
have explored the interface between the acoustic properties of specific
spaces and the perceptions of those who pass through them, whilst her
experiments in 'sonic telepresence' have composed the aural geographies of
dispersed spaces into evolving, networked soundscapes. Here Maryanne will
combine her interest in sound in space with an interrogation of the
possibilities opened by new media, suggesting that we now face
unprecedented potential for creating 'multidimensional immersive aural
architectures' - whilst never forgetting how sonic space may be both
transformative and enjoyed.

Today media exist which begin to match the range and subtlety of our
perceptual modes. As a result of recent advances in multisensorial and
immersive technologies, new visual and aural experiences are being
explored, some unlike any past experiences, particularly those being
created for converging media and telepresence platforms.

As immersive technologies expand and grow to mirror the sensitivity of our
responsive energies, will sound art delve consciously into these expanded
sensitivites? Consider two basic examples resulting from advances in
digital audio technologies: dynamic range and spatial dimension. Much of
the music circulating the world is still based on the limited capacity of
the recording technology available for Lp records having a dynamic range of
40db, compared to digital's 120db. With today's "technologies of presence"
we are able to experience multidimensional immersive aural architectures in
which sonic imaging is perceived from many different spatial orientations,
in large public spaces, and in homes with emerging multispeaker systems.
Hardware is no longer the problem. (Although I really wish loudspeakers
could rise out of their mechancial souls!)

The real need is to explore new ways in which intelligent interfaces can be
created which respond, enhance, and communicate with sonic perceptual
information being processed by the listener, in addition to sonic
information produced acoustically. It is important to fully realize, that
with the experiential nature of current technologies we are able for the
first time to effectively distinguish between acoustic information and
perceptual information, and consciously create for these dimensions.

"CREATING PRESENCE," Part 1 of this session will address the mapping of
"perceptual geographies" for new media: exploring scenarios and
vocabularies for staging multidimensional sonic worlds, and possibilities
for individualizing sonic imaging for listeners and for spaces.

"Creating Presence" is in response to Drew's questions:
>Are spatial effects and distributed sound destined to remain the preserve
of isolated art installations, or might they have a place in the venue and
PA design of tomorrow?
> D.H. will explore the grey area between club and installation,
considering the extent to which innovations devised primarily for art
installations can work in a club context.

I believe that many of the spatial applications now used mainly in art
installations can have exciting larger lives in many different situations.
Perhaps one of the problems is that often the isolated art installation is
not created as a compelling, transformative experience! There may be a real
appreciable lack of "presence" in this world, so that people have little to
respond or interact with. Experience is abstract, synaptic modulations
totally weak!

And this certainly has much to do with how perceptual information is
presented. It is very hard to resist good compelling beats, perceptually.
They are on target and there are no questions of their direct neural
effects! They create a really vivid world that everyone enters, with full
sensorial presence. I map "perceptual geographies" in the immersive aural
architectures I create because I want to target certain specific spatial
effects with the kind of compelling unquestionable, sensorial focus that
emerges in a beat environment. WAYS OF HEARING -- how we locate, sense and
feel sonic events -- are the specific factors which characterize experience
in immersive sonic environments; how we particularize acoustic information
to construct distinct transformative experiences. HOW CERTAIN SOUNDS ARE TO
BE PERCEIVED IN AN IMMERSIVE SONIC ENVIRONMENT IS AS IMPORTANT AS THE
SOUNDS THEMSELVES. What perceptual modes they trigger - where and how they
will exist for the listener. In creating 3D Music-Image Worlds, ways of
hearing become as important in shaping an aural architecture as the
acoustic information: such as frequencies, tone colors, and rhythms:

"Will certain sounds be locatable, seem miles away, feel close, pulsate
vertically above our head, vibrate an elbow, suddenly appear in the space,
dramatically disappear as though without a sound? Do we perceive the sound
in the room, in our head, a great distance away: do we experience all three
dimensions clearly at the same time? In the room, does the sound drift,
float, fall like rain? Does it make such a clear shape in the air we seem
to "see it" in front of our eyes? Is there no sound in the room at all, but
we continue to hear "after-sound" as our mind is processing sonic events
perceived minutes ago? Do we experience sonic imaging very near, moving
beside (outside and around) one ear only: "feel" patterns as they in fact,
do originate and develop quite specifically inside, within our ears.....?"

Taking VR (virtual reality) and telepresence as points of departure, it is
interesting to consider cross-sensory explorations between stereo visual
imaging and auditory dimension. After images. Thresholds. Physiological
resonances. Acoustic spaces of felt sound phenomena, experienced either
subliminally, or making recognizably direct physical resonances to the
body. Composite mental images of immersion in space, as in stereo vision;
direct physiological experience of an acoustic space, as distinguished from
the perception of an acoustic space, aurally, as "image."

The next installment of "Creating Presence" will discuss the staging of
some specific SONIC SHAPES and MOVEMENTS, and how they may appear in both
foreground and background structures.

In the meantime pick up your copy of J.G. Ballard's "Vermillion Sands" and
enter what may be the first virtual world with total "presence" maintained
through each of the incredible stories. And imagine constructing a sonic
equivalent, that is as vividly and totally present, even though the
Episodes may change over time. "Tone of Place" is indelibly alive,
penetrating sensorially from all perspectives. How does he do this? Years
ago I lived with these stories. And I realize now how much they influenced
the development of my concept for the "Mini-Sound Series" which I create.

I returned to Ballard the other day when the "sonic curtain" came up in
Drew's session. I always loved the wonderful "Sound Sweep" where the little
guy with the "sonovac" cleans all embedded sound, including ultrasonic and
takes it to the sonic dump. It was wonderful to again read Ballard's
descriptions of "ultrasonic spaces" and the atmospheres created by these
inaudible musics which are perceived, but not heard. Hopefully we might
have time to discuss such ultrasonic tonal inlays later in the discussion.

art is a privilege, a blessing, a relief. privilege means that you are a favorite, that what you do is not completely to your credit, not completely due to you, but is a favor conferred upon you. privilege entitles you when you deserve nothing. privilege is something you have and others don't. Art was a privilege given to me, and i had to pursue it, even more than the privilege of having kids.

The whole art mechanism is the result of many privileges, and it was a privilege to be apart of it... The privilege was the access to the unconscious. It is a fantastic privilege to have access to the unconscious. I had to be worthy of this privilege, and to exercise it. It was a privilege also to be able to sublimate. A lot of people can not sublimate. They have no access to their unconscious. There is something very special in being able to sublimate your unconscious, and something very painful in the access to it. But there is no escape from it, and no escape from access once it is given to you, once you are favored with it, whether you want it or not.

To escape you have to have a a place to go. You have to have the courage to face risk. You have to have independence. All these things are gifts. They are blessings... Sublimation is a gift; lots of people cannot sublimate.

The life of the artist is basically a denial of sex.

I really think my power of sublimation, my power of total recall, is due to the education my parents gave me - the discipline and also the notion of what you can expect. My feminism expresses itself in an interest in what women do. But I'm a complete loner. It doesn't help me to associate with people; it really doesn't help me. What helps me is to realize my own disabilities and to expose them. Another very sad statement is that I truly like only the people who help me. It is a very, very sad statement. I am not interested in art history.

In the academics of styles, a succession of fads.

Art is not about art.

Art is about life, and that sums it up. This remark is made to the whole academy of artists who have attempted to derive the art of the late 1980s, to try to relate it to the study of the history of art, which has nothing to do with art.

It has to do with appropriation.

It has to do with the attempt to prove that you can do better than the next one, and that a famous art history teacher is better that the common artist. If you are a historian, you have to have the dignity of a historian. You dont have to prove that you are better that the artist. What modern art means is that you have to keep finding new ways to express yourself, to express the problems, that there are no settled ways, no fixed approach.

This is a painful situation, and modern art is about this painful situation of having no absolutely definite way of expressing yourself. This is why modern art will continue, because this condition remains: it is the modern condition. It is about the hurt of not being able to express yourself properly, to express your intimate relations, your unconscious, to trust the world enough to express yourself directly in it.

It is about trying to be sane in this situation, of being tentatively and temporarily sane by expressing yourself. All art comes from terrific failures and terrific needs that we have. It is about the difficulty of being a self because one is neglected. Everywhere in the modern world there is neglect, the need to be recognized, which is not satisfied. Art is a way of recognizing oneself. which is why it will always be modern.

there was an art show at maxalot last night and I went. that's maxalot on the left.

the show was called Park in Space by a collective of 6 from Rotterdam. They call themselves antistrot.

I think buddy would have been in good company with this collective.

the djs kept playing a lot of reggae but never let a single song play all the way through.

Is this an evil mosquito? Yes.

we stayed very late. there were attempts to mop the floor.

but the bucket kept getting knocked over on accident.

I took Jesse's photo by the photo of the shrimp costume. the costumes were really lovely.

Mario came to visit me in Amsterdam for 3 weeks. He left yesterday and the days are blending so these aren't in order but you get the picture..

we walked around a lot at night

all the fun happens in the park

michael jackson died. we talked about bubbles. fandom is difficult.

we walked everywhere.

we made lots of dinners. they all kind of looked like this and tasted like this too. delicious.

didn't get to do any boating, next time...

we saw finally punk play! mario did the cover art for one of the 7"s, they gave us both copies!

the fuzz opened up! they're from amsterdam and were slaying jams.

night moves. ran into someone from denver who recognized the tag! special moment...

I had to go to work some days. mario practiced his mystic dance moves and made videos for me.

we flew to helsinki. we didn't get to sit next to each other. mario got to sit next to a cute girl but I had to sit next to a stinky man with bruises all over his body. eh, no matter. I was sleeping with my mouth open in no time.

mario made friends at the record store

he said he meditated in a cemetery while I was at work

we painted with them.

it was such a beautiful place, lovely.

We drove downtown Helsinki with our friends after painting.

we went out dancing to kenny carpenter from studio 54

it was magical. I was making mario stuff his pockets with confetti to use in a collage.

we fell asleep watching ET and then woke up and had to leave back to amsterdam

we both worked on the plane home.

we got back and Mario got the new cafe royal he's in! Cafe Royal 5! Cafe Royal publishes really special limited edition artist books out of the UK. Mario's 10 pieces look great.

next day we rented a scooter and drover out of amsterdam through haarlem to the beach that starts with "bloem"!

we ate at this amazing Indian restaurant. I don't know why we didn't take pictures. the food was delicious. our waitress drew us a map to the beach on heineken paper.

haarlem is lovely.

we made it to the beach!

I went to the Kino Engel movie theater in Helsinki and I was the only one in the theater! I've never been to a theater and been the only viewer, a single audience, just me and film, real film! A young girl sold me a ticket. An old man came down some stairs and unlocked theater 1, precisely at 20:45, ripped my ticket, let me in, and then locked the door behind me. He was also the projectionist, apparently. When the credits were finished he returned to unlock the door. No concessions. 9 euro ticket. Woody Allen's Vicky Christina Barcelona with Finnish and Swedish subtitles - they're both national languages in Finland. I loved it.

I'm working on some new collage for a group show at Emanuel Gallery in Denver, opening on January 3rd. I'll be showing with Brittany Gould, Yen 34 and a couple of others. The show is called Awake but Still Dreaming.

Tapping the mind. A lot is expected from art these days and the curators wanted step back from curating against a major message, from art that is suppose to make some socio-political statement about the times. Instead they're offering space and no message, chance, the possibility that viewer and art meet some kind of meaning on their own, or not.

Up late folding and stapling the new run of Bronze Legs. Dipping out of town on saturday morning for a week with Modern Witch. This issue includes a couple collages from Ryan Burghard of Portland who curates the online magazine beefmastermagazine.com. I'm happy with the collaboration and really admire his collage techniques. Tomorrow is Buddy and Jacob's tour kick off show at Rhinoceropolis. Need sleep to get deep with them. good night.

the Denver Zine Library is hosting a silent auction on Monday Oct. 20th to raise money for general operating costs of the library. Donations of art, goods and services are still helpful! The 2009 Denver Zine Library calendar will also be released and features some great artists this year, including: Patrick Keck, Sarah Slater, a Stranger Bulge, Travis Egedy (Pictureplane), Brittany Gould, Jennifer Calloway, Swek, and more!

this year, the auction will be held at the Other Side Arts and denver zine library will be open to browse. dj sets by Sarah Slater, Kristy Foom, Mario Zoots, Anna Inazu, and Kevin Richards. beer, food and a lot of art.
